Artists need to be less afraid of sketching. Truth is, sketching hurts our egos because it makes us struggle. We suddenly realize we are not as good as we thought. - OH NOooou! - So we avoid it and jump right into the piece thinking we’ll figure it out as we go (which sometimes works) but in my experience, the strongest pieces come from well-thought out sketches.
You don’t know how a building looks? Research. How does an ear look in this angle? Research. Don’t think: “Ah, whatevs, this is probably how it looks like.” No. You are only hurting your work as well as your growth as an artist. It might take longer, (yes, research is a hassle, especially when you have a specific image in mind and can’t find it) but if you do, the finishing process will be so much smoother and to the point.
Sketch, fail, research, sketch again, fail again, research again, succeed.
Let this be our mantra.
